Why Where Did Archipela-Go?
Hey, ever heard of Sandy Island New Caledonia? Us either, but apparently it was on maps from 1774 until 2012, when several seagoing vessels sailed through the area and confirmed that it did not actually exist. Best guess for why it was mapped for so long is that the original mappers saw a big chunk of floating pumice (from a nearby volcano) and mistakenly identified it as an island and no one ever bothered to double check before they made new maps. Like the planet Pluto (which does actually exist, we’re pretty sure), Sandy Island will always live in our hearts.
