Why Making Progress?
1975 was a year of barriers breaking everywhere you looked. President Gerald Ford signed a law allowing women into U.S. military academies for the first time. Arthur Ashe became the first Black man to win Wimbledon, while Frank Robinson became MLB’s first Black manager to start a season. Detroit launched America’s first Black-owned TV station, WGPR, and Caroline Svendsen became the first licensed female boxer in the U.S. Across sports, media, and the military, doors began to crack open for the first time.
