Why Oh Betsy, Just Sew?
In 1989, the Supreme Court ruled in Texas v. Johnson that the government cannot ban flag burning as a form of expression just because society finds it offensive. This sparked political backlash and led to the short-lived Flag Protection Act of 1989 (which was also struck down the following year). The U.S. flag’s origin story points to Betsy Ross, who, according to legend, sewed the first flag in 1776 after meeting George Washington. The story suggests Ross provided some unsolicited design advice, including changing the suggested six pointed stars to five points, and re-arranging them into a circle.
