Why Not That Pop?
In the mid-1970s, General Foods developed a powdered drink concept meant to become “instant soda” when mixed with water. The idea didn’t quite work as planned, but the leftover carbonating crystals took on a life of their own. Refined and repackaged, they became Pop Rocks—a candy that “explodes” in your mouth as trapped carbon dioxide is released. What started as a failed soda experiment turned into one of the most iconic novelty candies ever.
