On April 23, 1989, wine merchant William Sokolin made history at New York’s Four Seasons Restaurant… by accident. While presenting a 1787 Château Margaux believed to have belonged to Thomas Jefferson, the $500,000 bottle slipped, struck a table, and shattered before anyone could taste it. Insurance later paid out $225,000, sealing the moment as one of the most infamous and expensive wine accidents ever.
