Why Pittsburger Battle?
In 1967, McDonald’s franchise owner Jim Delligatti near Pittsburgh created the Big Mac to rival local restaurants that were serving bigger burgers. At the time, McDonald’s was known for simple, single-patty sandwiches, but customers in western Pennsylvania wanted something heartier. Delligatti stacked two beef patties, added a middle bun layer, and topped it all with his now-famous “special sauce.” His towering creation debuted at his Uniontown, Pennsylvania location and was such a hit that it went nationwide the following year — becoming one of the most iconic burgers in fast-food history.
