Why Up in Smoke?
On January 2, 1971 the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act went into effect, banning cigarette advertisements on television and radio. However, total sales of cigarettes showed an average annual increase of 2.5 percent in the five years following the advertising ban, including an increase of 4.4 percent in 1973 alone. Turns out that without cigarette commercials, anti-smoking commercials were also extinguished, and with the money Cigarette manufacturers saved they were able to diversify and expand their product offerings.
