Why Fight For Your Right?
The 26th Amendment to the US Constitution established a nationally standardized minimum age of 18 (previously 21) to vote in state and local elections. It came in response to the military drafts of the 1960s, which required men as young as 18 to fight in the Vietnam War. These young citizens had been required to fight, while not having a legal say in the government's decisions over waging the war. A youth rights movement claiming “old enough to fight, old enough to vote” successfully pushed Congress into proposing and then ratifying this amendment in July of 1971.
