Why Nix On Tape?
In 1940, FDR was the first president to install a secret taping system to record conversations in the Oval Office. Five subsequent presidents: Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon went on to use these systems. Nixon, who at first had been resistant to using the taping devices, had a new system installed in February of 1971 and ultimately recorded a total of 3400 hours of the combined 5000 hours from the six administrations. Among those recordings was the “Smoking Gun” conversation about the Watergate break-in, the discovery of which led to Nixon’s resignation.
