Why Flash Mob? On June 17, 2003, the first successful flash mob was organized by Bill Wasik, senior editor of Harper's Magazine. After strategic staging at several Manhattan bars, the group of over 200 participants met in the rug department of a Macy's department store to finalize their event. They split into two groups, one flooding the lobby and mezzanine of a nearby Hyatt hotel in synchronized applause, and the other overwhelming a shoe boutique in SoHo by pretending to be tourists.
