The Day of Five Billion, July 11, 1987, was designated by the United Nations Population Fund as the approximate day on which the world population reached five billion. Matej Gašpar from Zagreb, Croatia, was chosen as the symbolic 5-billionth person alive on Earth. The honor went to Gaspar because on July 11, when the announcement was to be made, then-Secretary General of the UN, Javier Perez de Cuellar, happened to be in Zagreb.
