Why Low and Slow?
At the 1971 National Housewares Show in Chicago, Rival Manufacturing introduced the Crock-Pot, an appliance previously marketed as “The Beanery” with roots dating back to the 19th century. This slow-cooking machine was inspired by the Jewish practice of cooking cholent, a stew made of meat, beans, and vegetables. The stew would be put in the oven before sundown on Friday and cooked using the residual heat over the course of the night, in order to avoid working on the Sabbath.
