Why Nine More Minutes?
There is not a worse sound on earth than the dreaded morning alarm. Catering to those who so desperately wanted just a few more minutes of shut-eye, G.E introduced the first snooze alarm in 1956. It was set to allow another 9 minutes of sleep for a more gentle waking. The bizarre length of 9 minutes (which is still in use today, even by Apple) was because the clockmaker couldn’t get the gear teeth to line up for 10 minutes. The 9 minute cycle was cheaper and easier to make, and people across the nation started arriving 9 minutes late everywhere they went.
