Why Road Work Ahead?
Today taking a cross-country road trip is no big deal, but in 1956 it was just a dream! Franklin Roosevelt saw the need for such a system, the demands of WWII made it almost impossible to get Congress and states to agree on what the system would look like and how it would be financed. In 1956, President Eisenhower was finally able to sign the The Federal-Aid Highway Act into law, and our great highway system began construction. It took over 10 years and $25 billion for the construction of over 41,000 miles of road, and was the largest public works project in American history at the time.
