Leavenworth Penitentiary, nestled in Kansas, opened its first cell house in 1906, marking the birth of one of the US government’s first federal prisons. Think of it as the original "model" prison, setting the bar for others across the country—kind of like the prototype for federal incarceration. Over the years, the prison became infamous for a whole slew of strange happenings, earning a reputation as not just a high-security facility, but also a breeding ground for eerie tales and oddities that still get people’s imaginations running wild. Oh, and let’s not forget the roster of infamous residents: James Earl Ray (yep, the guy who assassinated MLK), Robert Stroud (the “Birdman of Alcatraz”), and George “Machine Gun” Kelly, who was probably not the kind of guy you’d invite to a dinner party.
