Why Four Dollar Fortune? When Congress approved the Declaration of Independence in 1776, it ordered 200 copies to be printed by local printer, John Dunlap. Over the centuries, most have been lost—and only 26 known copies survive today. In 1989, one turned up in Adamstown, Pennsylvania, hidden behind an old picture frame that had been bought for just $4. That rare copy later sold to TV producer Norman Lear for $8.1 million, turning four dollars into a fortune.
