Why Splashdown?
Before Captain Sully and his Hudson River landing, Pan Am Flight 6 from Honolulu to San Francisco had a splashdown of its own. Pan Am 6 lost two of its four engines and had to ditch the plane in the Pacific Ocean in what would be the first safe water landing ever. The captain had the crew move all of the passengers forward in the plane, which saved them when the tail broke off on landing. The Coast Guard ship Pontchartrain was on site and able to rescue all 31 people on board. Next time you fly, you may want to actually listen to those lengthy instructions and remember where to find your life vest!
