Why Uno Numero Uno?
A barber, a funeral director, and a printer walk into a… hold on, let me backup. In 1971, the now widely popular card game, Uno, was developed by Merle Robbins, a barbershop owner from Reading, Ohio. He mortgaged his home to raise $8,000 to make 5,000 copies of his family’s favorite game. He eventually sold the rights to his game to a group of friends, headed by funeral parlor owner Robert Tezak for $50,000 and a royalty of 10 cents per game. Robert later sold it to Larry Saltzman of Saltzman Printers, who eventually sold it to the Mattel family of companies in 1992.
