Why Women of the Knight?
The Order of the Garter, founded in 1348 by Edward III of England, is the highest order of knighthood in the British system of honors. Appointments are at the Sovereign's sole discretion, typically made in recognition of national contribution, service to the Crown, or for distinguished personal service to the Monarch. Companions of the Order, as the knights are known, were unsurprisingly strictly male for more than 600 years. But thanks to Queen Elizabeth II, the Order was finally opened to women in 1987. The first lady to be awarded this honor was Lavinia, Duchess of Norfolk, in 1990.
